The Dream Rite edition shipped with a word that meant two things.
A Breach was what a clean run earned you: a token, held, spent. A breach was also what a subdued entity did when you spent one on it, and what everything still subdued did on its own once the Pantheon emptied.
I knew about this. I even wrote it down at the time, in the note settling the edition’s vocabulary: “the count says Breaches held, because Breach is both a token and an event and ‘3 breaches, 1 breaching’ puts both meanings a centimetre apart.”
That is not a solution. That is a workaround, written by somebody who could see the problem and chose to word around it.
There are two words now.
A Beckon is the token. Expunge two entities in a row, or three, or four depending on the rung you are descending at, and a Beckon is yours to hold.
A Breach is the event. Spend a Beckon and the entity you subdued breaches: it stands in front of you again, wounded exactly as you left it, to be finished properly this time.
Spend a Beckon and it breaches. That sentence could not be written before.
Because this game already has a family of calls, and the word was missing from it.
A Muster is the free one, and it fires because you are losing. A Summon is bought, and something wakes to pay for it. A Beckon is what you spend on one specific thing you left unfinished, to make it come back and face you.
Three calls, three registers, and none of them reaching for the same gesture.
Beacon was the first candidate and it is the one I nearly took. It is a real noun, it is a physical object you could draw, and it sits beside the Bloodstone in the Redoubt without looking out of place.
It also collides with the Signal, which is the eight things a seat can say to the rest of the table. A beacon is a signal. Two words for communicating at a distance, a centimetre apart, in a game whose entire vocabulary discipline is one word for one thing.
That is the same objection that retired “Gestating” before it was a day old, and it applies here for the same reason.
Nothing you can replay. The engine’s field is still rematches, the log’s tags
are still earned and spent, and no saved key moved. Every descent on record
rebuilds exactly as it did yesterday, and a room open right now is unaffected.
That split is the same one the ranks live under. The rules run on one vocabulary; you read another.
