Marooned

The Pantheon has twelve entities. Put one down exactly and it is Expunged. Put one down with Ruin to spare and it is Subdued. The umbrella word for both, the one on the tally and the twelve marks and every line of the log, was Banished.

Pandemic Legacy uses it for the same act. We arrived at it independently, which helps nobody: a player who knows both games meets the collision in the first minute and has to decide which rules they are reading.

Marooned

An entity is not destroyed. It is cast somewhere distant and left there, unable to return unaided.

That is the part the old word could not carry. Banished says gone; a Subdued entity is emphatically not gone, and the whole Chain rests on it still being out there. Marooned says both halves at once, and it makes a Beckon legible for the first time: a beacon is exactly what you light for something marooned.

Voided was the one to refuse

It was the strongest candidate and the argument against it took a minute to find. Void is already a Force. The Void wards, the Void is bound, there is a Void Rite and a Void chair among the Empyreans.

The problem is not that the word appears twice. It is that the word would be false. A Blood play maroons an entity. A Swarm play maroons an entity. So “Yog-Sothoth is Voided” asserts that the Void Force did it, and most of the time it did not.

A word that implies a mechanical relationship that is not there is worse than two words sitting a centimetre apart.

Adrift was the runner-up and lost on grammar. Marooning is something done TO a thing, which is what a player performs; adrift is a state a thing is in.

What did not move

Every field. banished, banished_perfect and banished_cards are read by key out of the save, so renaming them would revive live rooms with their tallies gone. Every recorded descent replays exactly as it did yesterday.

The rename touched prose only, and the rule that made it safe is worth writing down: a quoted run with no space in it is an identifier, not a sentence. That is what protected "banished" sitting in the save list two lines away from a sentence that changed.
