The board had four arrangements and a menu to pick between them. It has two now, and no menu.
Alone you get the Solo board. With company you get the Table. Nothing asks you which, and removing the question is the whole of this change.
The two boards are not two tastes. Each is an answer to a fact about the table in front of you.
Solo takes the table away. One lane holding one seat is a table with nothing in it, and what goes into the space it leaves is the arithmetic you were doing between turns anyway: the Gathering, what is banked, and what each Force does if you spend it now.
The Table does the opposite. It cannot remove the lanes without losing the other seats, so it moves the seats inside the Counter of Fates and lets one panel carry both.
Put those side by side and the menu is offering you a mistake. Solo with three other people hides them. The Table on your own draws an empty lane and calls it a table. Neither is a preference. Both are simply wrong in the other situation.
A control that can only agree with you is worse than no control, because it also implies there was something to decide.
Which board you are on is worked out from whether the descent is solo. Nothing is stored, and nothing is read back.
That matters, because a preference from before this change may still be sitting in your browser. It is ignored. Honouring it would put a player who once chose Two columns back on a board that no longer has a way out of itself, since the menu that could have moved them off it does not exist any more.
It cannot change under you partway through either. Whether a descent is solo is fixed the moment it starts, because nobody can join one already running.
Standard and Two columns are still in the stylesheet, and their bindings are still in the markup. One line changed: the thing that decides which board you are on can no longer return either of them. Bringing one back should be a change to that and nothing else.
Deleting the picker’s markup left two style rules valid and unreachable, and the check that hunts for rules nothing can reach named both of them the same afternoon. That is a gate earning its keep. An unreachable rule is not an error anywhere, so nothing else would ever have mentioned it.
